December 29, 2003 // 2:11 p.m. And that is where the similarities end. This morning I booked a hotel room for Saturday. And a one-way flight to Amsterdam. I feel delightfully adult and worldly. Yesterday I helped move Mel into his first fully-owned house! My brother is a freaking home-owner. Ahh, it's a dump, but a home nonetheless. I don't know, though -- their apartment had a bigger living room, a bigger dining room, a bigger kitchen, and an extra bathroom. Overall, a much nicer living space. What is the huge appeal of home ownership? I'll be content to stay in an apartment for a while. I just don't get the whole "American Dream" thing. But I'm excited for Mel and Rachel. I told Mel, "You know, the next time we make a big move like this, it's going to be me." My first apartment. A year and a half. What was once an immobilizingly scary prospect is now tremendously exciting. I've been thinking about this a lot lately. If all goes according to plan, it'll be a small place with Lani in Columbus. Grad school at OSU. I have dreams of a little loft over a downtown shop. I need some pots and pans and living room furniture, but otherwise I'm ready to go. So ready.
